Maybe I'm just completely out of the loop (which is quite possible as I don't pay a lot of attention to American politics) but this image was such a contradiction to the image of Obama that his campaign created in my mind, I had to share. Anyone else? Was this common knowledge?

I wasn't aware that he was a smoker but that seems like a pretty minor thing compared to the issues the US currently faces.
Odds are the republicans didn't want to make an issue of it since there were enough rumors as it was the John McCain wasn't healthy enough to be president.
News to me.
If he's at least making an effort to keep it out of the public eye, therefore not overtly sending a bad message to youngsters, then who cares if he has a nicotine monkey on his back.
Better that than playing a game of "Will the cigar fit in the intern."
