Sony is soooo going down... $599 US for a game console? Does anybody remember the 3D0? Didn't think so. It was the short lived console that came out at the dawn of CD based systems that retailed for, hmm.. lemme see now.... $599 US at launch date.
Coincidence?
I think not.
The name may suck, but it will rule the world! Go Wii!

I think it was $699.
Of course systems like the Magnavox Odyssey II, Sega Genesis, NeoGeo, Atari 5200 and Colecovision all came in in 80s for less (even a lot less) and they too are gathering dust.
I remember the 3D0. Right idea, wrong execution...
I keep tabs on all the E3 stuff going on and the Wii certainly stands a good chance of turning the industry on its ear. Having siad that, however, my prediction is that it will be the next generation of the Wii, not this first one, that really changes how we play games, cause by then all the fanboys will start selling their suddenly worthless PS3's and 360's to hop on the new bandwagon.
Ahh the 3D0. Even a mention of the name brings a tear of nostagia to my eye. Hands down, Need for Speed on the 3D0 is the most realistic driving experience I've ever had on a console. I can still feel the tension, stress and fear (yes, actual fear) while striving to reach the top speed record on Alpine in my jet black Diablo.
I may have to try to find a used one, just to play that game again.

The Wii...I must say, it's really starting to intrigue me. It may be just the sort of machine that my wife and I could really enjoy together.
As for the name, I think it is phenomenal. Viewing the word brings forth thought of the Orient and World War. Hearing the word, however, conjurs a wonderful sence of whim (at least, for me). I just hope the machine is able to match the dichotomy.
Clock
P.S. Love the title, Jay.
Even though I agree completely with Clock about how much fun it wasy, by almost any measurement the 3D0 console was a failure.
The execution, as Lord Jim indicated, was just horrible. They priced themselves out of range of the casual gamers in an era when the hardcore fanboys hadn't quite metastasized yet.
If that play on words hasn't been used in any Nintendo advertising yet, I should trademark it FAST! so they can pay me for it.
The Wii looks really good - hopefully the titles on offer will stick to Nintendos strong youth market?... there's enough shoot 'em up GIGO on the other platforms. At $249 I'll definitely consider it.
