Hey, was following some links down the rabit hole and came accross this interesting article. It is about future work to be done in the Labrynth and Dark Crystal worlds.

I am going to see what else I can find and post more as I find it. I am not sure about the rest of you but those two worlds were a staple of imagination in my childhood and would love to see more come from those worlds, I just hope that they are worth while.

I'm not so sure about the "...and would love to see more come from those worlds.." bit. Even if they are worth while, they will not have the same look and feel (due to massive differences in production and the almost sure-fire overuse of CG instead of puppets).
I'm nervous that all the good original ideas are used up and now we just have to swallow all of this recycled non-sense that keeps spewing out of the mega-machine studios that own the rights to all of this legendary work.
Call me melodramatic, but a small part of me feels like it dies with everyone of these, no matter how good intentioned. (in fact, I'm sure these director/producers are paving a road to a certain somewhere, even Gaiman, for shame!)
I understand where you are coming from, and all that I really have to go off is what is being posted on the net, but the people involved give me hope.
Brian Fraud is the guy that designed the characters for Labrynth, Dark crystal and many other works. When it comes to Faerie realms he is the master. Check out some of his work here, http://www.worldoffroud.com/www/main.cfm

Jim Hensons creature shop is doing the puppets, and yes they are using puppets for the main characters and the forground, they are only using CG for the background. Here is a link to the concept art of Queen Kira, ya you all remember Kira, that feisty little Gelfling (looks like she moved up in the world).

As for the director, he has shown his skill and worth in this type of medium with Dexters Labs and Clone Wars, not sure what else I can say about him.
As it appears that the sequel/prequel are in manga format, I say proceed. Hurray for heresy!
I'm going to buy the 50th Anniversary Muppet Movie (1979) and probably the Muppets Movie Collection if for no other reason than, it comes with Muppets From Space, the best of the new Muppets (but still a far cry from the 70's classics).
