Very cool, this would be awesome for ducking around corners and stuff in 3d shooters.
I do see one little problem in implementing this with the Wii's current hardware which is that the wiimotes turn themselves off after a few minutes of inactivity. Some seperate usb sensor would probably have to be released.
I also wonder if something similar couldn't be done with sony's eyetoy. Although that would probably get screwed up pretty quickly if another person walked into its field of view.
Seems to me that it should be far easier to do with the PS3 Eye (which I here dub the PSIII). It's not just an infra-red camera like the wii remote, it is a fully functional camera. Not only could it be set up to sense infra-red LEDs (as all digital cameras can) but it could incorporate full body movement, or multiple points of movement on any point of the human body, although I have found that high contrast clothing and backgrounds help.
Aside -- My family and I have been playing Tower of Topaq on the PSIII as a multiplayer game. The most we have played with is 3 plus a rogue pet or toddler in the room. I'm curious how it would play trained on a grid of 9 people or more. For $7 it was a real bargain. I only crave a level editor...
All I've been playing on our PS3 is Time Crisis 4. With the Guncon gun, it's a ton of fun.
It probally helps that I'm shooting at a 110" screen, so it really feels like I'm running down the track shooting. Big downside, it's surprisingly tiring.

I really enjoyed Tori Emaki. A great relaxation toy.
Here are some images, but the sounds, revealed as you explored, were tops for me.
Yeah, the PSIII has been a fantastic investment for us.

Mesmerize*
* when we have people over to socialize, we often leave this running while we sit and visit, it's awesome
I still haven't even played a game of Eye Of Judgement yet. (Guess I'm waiting for a challenger?)
Pecan loves Mesmerize.
She calls it "The game with the fluffs."
