a cesspool of interwebness

Back in 2006 I was toying with the idea of spending a huge amount of time and effort to write a "smashing website" - if you want to see what I was thinking, you can read about that here.

At the time it seemed like a better idea to just go ahead and spin up a blog instead and try to get everybody involved in contributing. Here we are four years later and the blog is still alive, kicking, and well screaming some of the time actually. All in all, I'm very happy with it. We have our dry spots where nobody seems to have anything to say and we have our monsoons where the deluge of comments, links, embeds and posts are hard to keep up with. I actually think this is a healthy pulse, a rhythm you might even call it.

As of today (July 28th 2010) the blog is entering it's fourth presentation iteration and I hope this theme stays for a while. It's clean, tight and does all the stuff it needs to without being too overbearing or cluttered. I'll try to keep it that way
UPDATE - I still have the 4 template headers, but I haven't taken the time to craft the javascript required to rotate it based on date yet, but it IS on my ToDo list.  Do you spreken ze Javascript? If so, I'll give you admin rights and you can make it happen (personally I hate the shit).

I've been slowly adding more authors to the blog as of late, so I thought I would spend a minute to talk about that a bit.  We've always had a pretty strict policy of "no real names" on the blog, not because we are trying to protect anybody, but because it's kinda fun.  If you want to know who someone is, email me and I'll tell you all kinds of lies about that person.

The second item to address is the question: "what kinds of posts are appropriate?"  This is tricky to answer.  The tag-line for the blog is "cesspool of interwebness" and I meant it.  If you come across a really good web-comic, vid-clip or content-page please share it, but make sure you provide some context when you do - why did it catch your eye? - who is it designed to offend? - when will Kyro leave me the fuck alone about posting/commenting?  <--- all valid context to include.

I also want to start encouraging people to post game-reviews and movie op-ed style posts.  They're great for getting a good comment flame war started.  Just remember, it's all in good fun.

In closing, I want to add that I can't thank those who have contributed over the years enough for their time and effort - it's meant a lot to me to have a wide range of content and readership.  Here's to 4.5 more years of mindless drivel shared between close friends (and who knows, maybe we can take this thing to the next level?).
